Chess history

The Federación Argentina de Ajedrez (FADA), founded in 1928 and based in Buenos Aires, is Argentina's FIDE-affiliated national federation and runs the Argentine Chess Championship, first held in 1921. Buenos Aires is home to the Club Argentino de Ajedrez, founded in 1905 and one of the oldest and most storied clubs in the Americas — it hosted the 1927 World Championship match between José Raúl Capablanca and Alexander Alekhine. The city later hosted the 1939 Chess Olympiad, remembered for coinciding with the outbreak of World War II and for the wave of European players, including Miguel Najdorf, who stayed in Argentina rather than return home. Buenos Aires hosted the Olympiad again in 1978. Beyond the capital, provincial federations and clubs feed players into national events and FIDE-rated tournaments, giving Argentina a chess culture that runs deeper than any one city, even as Buenos Aires remains its public face.
