The All India Chess Federation (AICF), founded in 1951 and affiliated with FIDE and the Asian Chess Federation, governs the sport nationally. Chennai's status as India's chess capital traces back to the Tal Chess Club, founded in 1972 by IM Manuel Aaron, India's first International Master, whose lectures a young Viswanathan Anand attended. Anand went on to become India's first grandmaster and a five-time World Champion. That foundation, later reinforced by academies such as the WestBridge Anand Chess Academy, has made Tamil Nadu the country's most productive state for grandmasters. India hosted its first Chess Olympiad in 2022 in Chennai, where Indian players won individual gold medals through D Gukesh and Nihal Sarin and the women's team took bronze. In December 2024, Chennai-born Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion in history at 18, and India now regularly places multiple players in the world's top ranks.
- Chennai and Tamil Nadu form the country's chess center of gravity, with dozens of academies and a decades-deep coaching tradition.
- The national federation (AICF) runs the FIDE-affiliated tournament and ratings structure, including the National Chess Championship.
- A strong current generation (Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Koneru Humpy) means high-level competition and coaching are accessible, not just historical.
