Chess history

Chess in Japan is organized under the Japan Chess Federation, the country's sole FIDE member. The lineage runs back to the Japan Tournament Chess Association, founded in 1967, which joined FIDE in 1968 and was renamed the Japan Chess Association; in 2019 the National Chess Society of Japan took over as the governing body, and in 2023 it adopted the current name, Japan Chess Federation. Tokyo has Chess Center UENO and a network of registered clubs, along with the Japan Collegiate Chess Federation for university players. The federation runs a national championship each year plus the Japan Team Chess Championship and the Japan Open, and fields a team at the Chess Olympiad. Chess remains a minority pursuit next to shogi and go, so the competitive pool is small, but it is well-organized for its size, with rated events, junior and collegiate programs, and a real path from club play to international competition.

  • Tokyo is the hub — Chess Center UENO and most registered clubs are based there, making it the natural starting point for finding regular play.
  • The Japan Chess Federation runs a compact but complete calendar: a national championship, the Japan Team Chess Championship, and the FIDE-rated Japan Open.
  • Japan has fielded Olympiad teams since joining FIDE in 1968, so there's a real (if small) competitive tradition to plug into, including university play through the Japan Collegiate Chess Federation.
