The Šahovska zveza Slovenije (Chess Federation of Slovenia), based in Ljubljana, is Slovenia's FIDE-affiliated national federation and runs the country's championships, junior programs, and international team selections. Chess reaches deep into everyday life here: the federation counts roughly 20,000 registered players along with about a dozen grandmasters. Bled hosted the 35th Chess Olympiad in 2002, a large-scale event that put Slovenia on the map as an organizer, and Ljubljana has since built its own reputation through the Ljubljana Chess Festival, an annual international open organized by the Ljubljana Chess Club with the city and the national federation. Maribor is another longtime hub: ŠK Maribor, founded in 1927, is a multiple national team champion and home to a well-known chess school and the traditional Vasja Pirc memorial tournament. The competitive scene is anchored by figures past and present: Milan Vidmar, one of FIDE's first Grandmasters in 1950, remains the country's most historically important player, while Luka Lenič, a multiple national champion and longtime top-ranked Slovenian, has carried the torch through the modern era. Slovenia's number one is now Vladimir Fedoseev, who transferred to the federation in 2023.
