West Virginia championship announcements, tournament standings, results, and state chess news.
West Virginia's chess scene runs through the West Virginia Chess Association (WVCA), founded in 1941 to foster and promote chess across the state, which sanctions the Grand Prix series and the state's marquee events. Weekly club play is spread out rather than concentrated in one city: the Beckley, Charleston, Huntington, and Wheeling clubs each host regular meetups, alongside the WVU Chess Club at the Mountainlair in Morgantown, and the WVCA directory lists a dozen more clubs statewide. Morgantown is home to the Mountaineer Open, an annual one-day January tournament at the Mountainlair that reached its 25th edition in January 2026. The state championship, the Thomas Bergquist Memorial, is a two-day event held each September at Marshall University in Huntington. Scholastic chess has its own long tradition too, with the WV Scholastic Chess Championships reaching their 55th annual edition in Clarksburg in 2026.
- The Mountaineer Open, an annual one-day Swiss tournament at the Mountainlair on the WVU campus in Morgantown, reached its 25th edition in January 2026 and draws players from across the region each winter.
