Chess history

Organized chess in Brazil runs through the Confederação Brasileira de Xadrez (CBX), founded in 1924 (originally as the Federação Brasileira de Xadrez) and affiliated with FIDE as the country's official representative. The CBX oversees national ratings, titles, and the Brazilian Chess Championship, which has been contested since 1927. Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo have long been the country's chess centers, and activity is generally denser across the South and Southeast than in the Northeast. Rio also has a specific place in chess history: Octávio Trompowsky, a Rio-based player and Brazilian champion, gave his name to the Trompowsky Attack and famously drew world champion Alexander Alekhine. Brazil's competitive high point came through Henrique Mecking, who became the country's first grandmaster in 1972 and reached world number three by 1978, before illness forced a long break from the game. Today the CBX-affiliated circuit is carried by an active group of grandmasters, including Alexandr Fier, Krikor Mekhitarian, Luis Paulo Supi, and Rafael Leitão.

  • Brazil has a real depth of active FIDE-titled players today, not just historic names, which makes for a competitive domestic circuit
