Organized chess in Finland runs through the Finnish Chess Federation (Suomen Shakkiliitto), founded in 1922 and a member of FIDE and the Nordic Chess Federation. Helsinki is the country's chess center, anchored by Helsingin Shakkiklubi, founded in 1886 and the oldest chess club in Finland, and joined more recently by fast-growing community groups such as Helsinki Street Chess. The federation coordinates a national club network and an annual Finnish Chess Championship, first won in 1922 by Anatol Tschepurnoff. Finland's competitive tradition includes hosting the 10th Chess Olympiad in Helsinki in 1952, and a lineage of strong players from Eero Böök and record 13-time champion Kaarle Ojanen through Heikki Westerinen, the country's first grandmaster, up to grandmaster Tomi Nyback.
