Chess history

Chess in Germany is organized under the Deutscher Schachbund (DSB), founded in Leipzig in 1877, making it one of the oldest national federations in the sport. The DSB oversees more than 2,500 affiliated clubs and upwards of 90,000 members, giving the country an unusually dense grassroots network compared to most of Europe. Its flagship competition, the Chess Bundesliga, launched in 1980 and is commonly cited as the strongest club league in the world, with teams such as SG Solingen and Hamburger SK fielding lineups that mix titled professionals with local players. Germany has twice hosted the Chess Olympiad, in Hamburg (1930) and Leipzig (1960), and a German team won gold at the 1939 Olympiad in Buenos Aires. The country's competitive tradition runs from Emanuel Lasker, its only World Champion, through postwar stalwarts like Siegbert Tarrasch's theoretical legacy and grandmaster Robert Hübner, to Vincent Keymer today, one of the world's top-rated players.
