Nebraska state association information, chess history, and The Gambit newsletter archives.
The Nebraska State Chess Association is the state's US Chess affiliate and has kept a record of every Nebraska state champion from 1899 onward. Omaha's Jack Spence Chess Club, named for the longtime local player and chess historian Jack Spence, anchors regular over-the-board play in the state's largest cities. Nebraska hosted several major events in the mid-20th century: Omaha hosted the U.S. Open Chess Championship in 1949 and 1959, and Lincoln hosted it in 1969 and 1975, drawing grandmasters like Pal Benko, Arthur Bisguier, and William Lombardy to the state. The Nebraska Chess Hall of Fame, established in 1996, keeps that history alive; its 2024 class in Lincoln inducted International Master Keaton Kiewra and Woman International Master Alexey Root, both of whom learned the game in Lincoln.
