The Tennessee Chess Association (TCA), organized in 1947, is the state's USCF affiliate and organizes the club network, scholastic programs, and the annual state championship. Its hub is the Nashville Chess Center, founded in 1995 by Dr. Martin Katahn in a three-story building on Belmont Boulevard in Nashville's Belmont-Hillsboro neighborhood, which has hosted the US Cadet Championship and runs scholastic and open events year-round under longtime director FM Todd Andrews. Beyond Nashville, the Chattanooga Chess Club and the Tennessee Valley Chess Club in Knoxville give East Tennessee players regular weekly play. The state's marquee event, the Peter P. Lahde Tennessee Open and State Championship, has been held annually since 1947 and has rotated among Nashville, Memphis, and Crossville in recent years.
