Chess history

Chess in Costa Rica is run by the Federación Costarricense de Ajedrez (FCA), based at the Estadio Nacional in La Sabana, San José, which is a FIDE member federation and organizes the country's rating system, national team selection, and youth and scholastic programs. The Costa Rican Chess Championship, first held in 1927, is the country's oldest and most prestigious event and gives the scene a long competitive throughline that few Central American federations can match. Activity is concentrated around San José, where national championships, team events, and school tournaments are typically staged, and the federation has increasingly pushed chess into the education system through regional and national scholastic competitions. Costa Rica also fields men's and women's teams at the Chess Olympiad on a fairly regular basis, and in 2026 San José is hosting the American continental stage of the FIDE/ISCF World Schools Team Championship, a sign of the federation's ongoing push into international scholastic events.

  • The national scene runs through the FCA in San José — check its tournament calendar (ajedrezcostarica.com) for the national championship, team events, and youth opens.
  • The Costa Rican Chess Championship, running since 1927, is the country's most established title and a good benchmark for the strength of the local field.
  • Olympiad participation is regular but modest by world standards — recent men's and women's teams have finished in the middle-to-lower half of the field, so strong club players can be competitive quickly.
