The Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE), founded in 1921, governs French chess and is a full FIDE member, having been among the federations present at FIDE's founding in Paris in 1924. Paris is home to the historic Café de la Régence scene that once anchored 18th- and 19th-century European chess, but today's competitive strength is spread across the country through the elite national club league (long known as the Top 12 and now run as the Top 16), where teams recruit grandmasters rated well above 2600. France hosted the Chess Olympiad in Nice in 1974, the only official Olympiad held on French soil. Clubs across the country support young players as well as grandmasters.
- France's elite national club league (long the Top 12, now the Top 16) is one of the strongest in Europe, alongside Germany's Bundesliga, with many 2600+ grandmasters playing club chess.
- The FFE (Fédération Française des Échecs), founded in 1921, is France's FIDE-affiliated federation and runs the national championship and rating system.
- Paris carries the historic weight, but strong clubs and league play are spread nationwide, so serious competition is accessible well outside the capital.
