State chess association

Chess history

The Michigan Chess Association (MCA), founded in 1931, is the state's USCF affiliate and runs the official championship calendar, including the Michigan Open. Southeast Michigan carries most of the organized activity, with the University of Michigan's Michigan Chess Club and the Ann Arbor Chess Club (hosted at the Ann Arbor District Library's Westgate branch) anchoring the Ann Arbor area. Detroit's Wise Guy's Chess Club has built a following by taking chess into public spaces like Rivertown Market rather than sticking to a single clubhouse. Detroit is also where GM Ben Finegold, Michigan's first grandmaster, and FM James Canty III, a product of the Bates Academy chess team, both learned the game.

  • Play in the Michigan Open, the MCA's flagship annual tournament with Open, Reserve, and Booster sections for every rating level.
  • Drop into the Michigan Chess Club at the University of Michigan Union in Ann Arbor, open Thursday and Friday evenings.
  • Catch Wise Guy's Chess Club's public pop-up sessions in Detroit, including the recurring Grocery Gambits series at Rivertown Market.
