State chess association

Chess history

The North Dakota Chess Association (NDCA) is the state's nonprofit USCF affiliate — it recognizes a state champion each year and runs a separate State Scholastic Chess Tournament for grades K-12, held in Bismarck. Fargo has the more visible weekly club scene: the Fargo Chess Club hosts regular rated games and the North Dakota Open. Bismarck and Fargo also support several smaller, informal groups, including library-hosted clubs (the Bismarck Veterans Memorial Library and the Downtown Fargo Public Library) and a Bismarck Chess Club that meets at the La Ta Da coffee shop. Recent state champions recognized by the NDCA include Scott Hogfoss of Fargo and Todd Wolf of Bismarck, both repeat winners across the 2010s and 2020s.
