Chess history

Chess in Hungary is organized by the Hungarian Chess Federation (Magyar Sakkszövetség), founded in 1921 and affiliated with FIDE, which runs the national championship and the top domestic team league, now called the Szuperliga. Budapest is home to the federation and to the long-running "First Saturday" tournament series, a monthly round-robin event held since 1992 specifically to let visiting players from around the world earn GM and IM norms. The country's competitive tradition runs deep: Hungary won the first two official Chess Olympiads in 1927 (London) and 1928 (The Hague), and pulled off a celebrated upset gold in 1978 in Buenos Aires behind Lajos Portisch. That tradition of producing exceptional individual talent continued with the Polgár sisters in Budapest in the late 20th century and carries on today through players like Richárd Rapport.

  • Budapest's First Saturday tournaments are a well-known route for foreign players to chase GM and IM norms in round-robin events held most months since 1992.
  • The Szuperliga, Hungary's top team championship, anchors a club scene concentrated around Budapest but drawing on strong players from across the country.
  • Hungary's Olympiad pedigree is real, not just history: golds in 1927, 1928, and 1978, plus a modern era led by Richárd Rapport, who reached No. 5 in the world in 2022.
