Chess history

The Federația Română de Șah has run Romanian chess since 1925, and Romania was one of FIDE's founding members, signing the world body's 1924 founding act through its delegate Ion Gudju. The national championship was held irregularly at first and became a yearly event in 1946. Bucharest's organized club chess goes back to an 1892 club at the Kuebler cafe. More recently, the city has hosted the Grand Chess Tour's Superbet Chess Classic Romania, which brings players like Fabiano Caruana and Alireza Firouzja to the city each year. Romania has also long hosted the Kings Tournament, a super-tournament that has drawn the likes of Magnus Carlsen. Florin Gheorghiu, the country's first grandmaster, set the tone by beating Bobby Fischer at the 1966 Olympiad in Havana, and that competitive tradition carries through to today's national number one, Bogdan-Daniel Deac.
